Unit 8 will take us from the aftermath of World War II up to the recent past as we end the year with a survey of the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, and the Vietnam Conflict. We will examine life in Jim Crow America, setting the stage for the Civil Rights Movement and the setting for To Kill a Mockingbird. We will then witness many of the important events of the Civil Rights Movement, create first-hand accounts of the major events of the Civil Rights movement, illustrate MLK's "dream", and try to evaluate the current status of civil rights. You will be looking at the origins and major events that defined the Cold War, in which the U.S. and the Soviet Union built up their military power and international influence but did not directly combat one another on the battlefield. The conflict in Vietnam will be the central event in our discussion of foreign policy, as we look at the causes and effects of this controversial struggle. The entire unit will be completed online, with no traditional unit ISN! It should be a fun, rewarding, and easy way to end the year.
